Keeping your flute clean is essential for good sound, smooth playability, and a long instrument life. A clean flute not only looks better, it helps prevent sticky pads, buildup inside the tubing, and damage to delicate mechanisms.

At Chagrin Valley Music, we teach every new flute student how to care for their instrument from day one. Here’s our complete guide to cleaning your flute properly at home.

🛠 What You’ll Need

  • Cleaning rod (usually included with your flute)

  • Soft, lint-free cleaning cloth (cotton or microfiber)

  • Polishing cloth (optional, for exterior shine)

  • Pad cleaning paper (optional, for sticky pads)

1️⃣ Disassemble the Flute

  • After playing, gently take the flute apart into its three sections: headjoint, body, and footjoint.

  • Handle each part by the smooth areas of the tubing—avoid pressing keys or rods.

2️⃣ Clean the Inside

  1. Thread your cleaning cloth through the slot in the cleaning rod so it’s securely wrapped.

  2. Insert the rod into each flute section, twisting gently to absorb moisture.

  3. Make sure the cloth covers the tip of the rod to avoid scratching the inside.

💡 Tip: Always swab your flute after each playing session to prevent moisture damage and pad deterioration.

3️⃣ Wipe the Exterior

  • Use a dry, soft cloth to remove fingerprints and oils from the outside.

  • Wipe gently around the keys—don’t pull or bend any rods.

  • Avoid silver polish unless recommended by a technician, as it can harm pads and springs.

4️⃣ Care for the Pads

  • If a pad feels sticky, use pad cleaning paper:

    1. Place the paper under the pad.

    2. Close the key gently, then lift—it will remove moisture or residue.

  • Never rub the pad, as this can damage the surface.

5️⃣ Avoid Common Mistakes

  • Don’t wash the flute in water—this will ruin the pads and mechanisms.

  • Don’t use alcohol or harsh cleaners on the pads or inside tubing.

  • Don’t store your flute assembled—it can warp joints and trap moisture.
